The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Nagpur and Wardha districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning. In response, the Nagpur district administration has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Wednesday, July 9, as a precaution.
Nagpur has been receiving continuous rain over the last few days, causing severe waterlogging, overflowing drains, and rising river levels. As per the IMD’s regional office, the city recorded 172.2 mm of rain in just nine hours between 8:30 pm on Tuesday and 5:30 am Wednesday.
Nagpur Collector Vipin Itankar issued an official order citing heavy rainfall across several parts of the district, warning of a possible flood-like situation. As a safety measure, all educational institutions, including Anganwadis, have been closed to protect students amid the worsening weather.
Several state highways in the district have also been shut due to waterlogging, and many roads in different talukas are now impassable. Visuals from areas like Narendra Nagar show flooded streets and submerged underpasses, highlighting the severity of the situation.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has initiated rescue and dewatering efforts in several waterlogged areas of the city. “Nagpur received heavy rainfall causing waterlogging in the city. We have received 40-50 distress calls, and 5-7 trees have fallen. A rescue operation is underway after reports of people being stranded,” said Tushar Barahate, NMC’s Chief Fire and Disaster Management Officer. To manage the flooding, dewatering pumps have been deployed at key locations.
The NMC’s City Operation Centre is actively monitoring the situation through CCTV surveillance and handling emergency response calls from citizens. Meanwhile, the IMD has issued an orange alert for Amravati and Yavatmal, and a yellow alert for Akola, Washim, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Bhandara, and Gondia districts in the Vidarbha region. According to rainfall data from Tuesday, Bhiwapur recorded the highest rainfall in Nagpur district at 12 cm, followed by Ramtek (11 cm), Mauda, Kuhi, and Parseoni (10 cm each), Kamptee (9 cm), Umrer (8 cm), and Kalmeshwar and Nagpur Aerodrome (7 cm each).
