As torrential rain batters Nagpur, the city now faces a major water crisis after the Kanhan River flooded key intake wells, crippling the Kanhan Water Treatment Plant’s operations and slashing water supply to 33 ESR zones.
The flooding has clogged the intake systems with debris, sand, and silt, drastically reducing raw water lifting. Despite manual cleaning efforts, full pumping can’t resume until floodwaters recede.
Residents across large swaths of the city—including Nandanvan, Kalamna, Pardi, Lakadganj, Subhan Nagar, Binaki, Uppalwadi, Indora, Shanti Nagar, and Tajbagh—are reporting dry taps or weak pressure. Affected areas include MIG, LIG colonies, slums, and industrial zones, hitting daily life hard.
“This isn’t just a shortage—it’s a breakdown,” said a resident of Bharatwadi. “No water, no warning.”
OCW and NMC teams are on standby, ready to begin desilting once river levels fall. But with more rain forecast in Vidarbha, the misery is far from over.
Meanwhile, NMC-OCW has urged citizens to conserve every drop, and helpline 1800 266 9899 is active for grievances.
This latest disruption exposes the city’s lack of flood-proof infrastructure around essential services. As Nagpur reels under dual crises of water and power outages, the question looms: How many more floods will it take for the system to act?
