Vehicular movement on the crucial Gadchiroli-Nagpur highway has remained suspended for the past four days due to flooding triggered by overflowing rivers. The Pal River, Kolandi Nullah, and Gadhvi River have inundated sections of the highway, prompting authorities to halt traffic as a safety measure.
In addition to this key route, several other highways and state roads have also been affected. These include the Gadchiroli-Chamorshi National Highway, Ashti-Alapalli National Highway, Talodhi-Amgaon-Regadi Devda State Highway, Aheri-Vatra-Bejurpalli-Parsewada State Highway, and the Haranghat-Chamorshi State Highway. Furthermore, around 10 interior district roads have been closed due to waterlogging and poor road conditions.
The disruption has thrown normal life into disarray, with commuters either stranded or forced to take long detours to reach or exit Gadchiroli. Despite the district recording just 13.2 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, floodwaters from the upstream regions have contributed to the ongoing crisis.
Chandrapur Affected by Rising Wardha River
In neighboring Chandrapur district, a flood-like situation has emerged following the release of water from the Upper Wardha Dam in Wardha district. The Wardha River has overflowed, submerging the Bhoyegaon bridge on the Dhanora-Gadchandur road under over five feet of water. Authorities promptly shut down the bridge for all traffic early Thursday morning.
Traffic has also been suspended on another stretch over the Wardha River, connecting Warora tehsil to Yavatmal via Soit, as the region grapples with the aftermath of the dam water release.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are advising residents to avoid travel unless necessary, while alternate routes are being suggested for essential movement.
