In a landmark move to honor the state’s rich cultural heritage, the Maharashtra government on Thursday officially declared the over 100-year-old Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav as the State Festival of Maharashtra. The announcement was made in the Legislative Assembly by Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar.
Highlighting the significance of the celebration, Shelar stated, “Ganeshotsav is more than just a festival—it embodies Maharashtra’s cultural pride and the nation’s collective identity.”
Tracing its origins, the minister recalled that the public celebration of Ganeshotsav in Maharashtra was initiated in 1893 by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. What began as a religious observance was transformed by Tilak into a movement to unite people and inspire a spirit of nationalism during the freedom struggle.
“The essence of this festival lies in its message of social harmony, national pride, freedom, self-respect, and reverence for our language and traditions,” Shelar added.
The declaration underscores the state’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting this deeply rooted cultural legacy, which continues to bring communities together year after year.
