The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has decided to continue the temporary 10 per cent seasonal increase in fares for its ordinary bus services until July 31.
According to the state-run transport undertaking, the extension has been necessitated by the continued rise in diesel prices and mounting operational expenses, which have added to the financial burden on the corporation.
MSRTC officials said the increase in fuel costs has substantially pushed up the corporation’s daily expenditure on diesel, affecting its overall operating budget.
One of the country’s largest public transport operators, MSRTC runs a fleet of over 14,000 buses and caters to more than 55 lakh passengers every day across Maharashtra.
The seasonal fare revision was introduced during the peak summer travel period and was originally scheduled to remain in force only until midnight on July 15. The corporation has now extended the measure for another two weeks.
