Indian food giant Haldiram’s received an enthusiastic welcome as it opened its first outlet in the United Kingdom, with hundreds of people reportedly turning up at its new restaurant in London’s Leicester Square.
Videos showing long queues outside the newly launched outlet have been widely shared on social media, reflecting the excitement surrounding the brand’s entry into the UK market.
One of the viral clips, posted by Instagram page views.we.explore, captured large numbers of customers waiting patiently outside the restaurant. The post humorously suggested that the opening had become the preferred weekend destination for the Indian community in London. The overwhelming turnout and extended waiting times underscored the popularity of the Indian food chain among expatriates and local food lovers alike.
The viral videos sparked varied reactions online. While many users welcomed Haldiram’s arrival in the British capital and expressed eagerness to try its offerings, others questioned whether the long queues were justified, noting that many of the company’s packaged products are already widely available in supermarkets and Indian stores across the UK.
Some social media users joked that preparing favourite Indian dishes at home might be easier than waiting in line, while others praised the orderly manner in which customers queued outside the restaurant. Joining the online conversation, Haldiram’s responded to one of the posts with the message: “Delhi called. Leicester Square answered.”
Founded in 1937 by Ganga Bhishen Agarwal in Bikaner, Rajasthan, Haldiram’s started as a small sweets business before expanding into one of India’s largest food brands. Today, the company operates restaurants and markets a wide range of Indian snacks, sweets and ready-to-eat products in several countries around the world.
