In a major step aimed at enhancing police safety and improving operational readiness, Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil has directed all eligible police personnel to carry their service firearms while on duty.
The order, issued across the Nagpur Police Commissionerate on Thursday, makes it mandatory for officers and staff who have been allotted service weapons to keep them with them during official assignments. The directive covers personnel across various wings of the force, including traffic police personnel who often face challenging situations during vehicle checks, anti-drunk driving drives and other enforcement operations.
Police officials said the move has been prompted by growing concerns over attacks on police personnel and the need for quicker response capabilities during emergencies and law-and-order situations. According to the order, officers equipped with service weapons will now be required to carry their pistols or revolvers in addition to their standard equipment while discharging their duties.
The instructions also apply to senior officers, including Senior Police Inspectors (SPIs), Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) and Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), who have been asked to carry their officially issued firearms while on duty.
Officials believe the measure will not only improve the confidence and preparedness of police personnel but also act as a deterrent against criminals and individuals attempting to obstruct police work. The development comes days after Commissioner Nangre Patil issued instructions to traffic police personnel to maintain proper discipline, wear clean uniforms and ensure courteous interaction with members of the public while on duty.
With the latest directive, the Nagpur Police has expanded its focus from discipline and public engagement to strengthening the safety and preparedness of its personnel in the field.
