Meeting of Standing Committee Chairman with Commissioners
A meeting was held at the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) headquarters to discuss plans to promote Nagpur’s historical sites, cultural heritage and ancient temples among tourists and to develop the city as a major tourism destination.
The proposal includes preparing an information booklet highlighting Nagpur’s important tourist attractions and making it available to visitors arriving in the city. The meeting was chaired by Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani Vakhre and attended by Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar and senior civic officials.
The Nagpur Tourism Development Scheme was proposed by Shivani Dani Vakhre in the NMC budget. Speaking during the meeting, she said tourism can play an important role in promoting the concept of self-transformation under the Panch Parivartan initiative. She said strengthening the city’s identity and promoting local heritage would boost tourism and contribute to the overall development of Nagpur. According to her, even small initiatives can bring about significant social and economic change.
As part of the initiative, tourists will be able to access information about around 100 important squares and landmarks in the city through QR codes linked to audio-visual presentations. Information booklets will also be made available at major locations across the state as well as at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport for visitors arriving in Nagpur.
Dani Vakhre said efforts would be made to promote the Marbat festival, one of Nagpur’s unique cultural traditions, among tourists from across the country and abroad. She also proposed organising special events and festivals to increase tourist footfall in the city.
The administration was also asked to explore the possibility of organising events such as Savaji Utsav and Bunkar Utsav on a larger scale to showcase Nagpur’s food culture and traditional weaving heritage. The meeting also discussed the establishment of a Shatabdi Museum, which would showcase the history and contributions of institutions in Nagpur that are more than 100 years old.
Another proposal involved developing facilities and study resources for medical students at Dr Hedgewar Reading Room in Aath Rasta Layout. Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar said plans would be prepared to develop Nagpur into a tourism hub with the support of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation and other organisations.
