The Maharashtra government has decided to postpone the introduction of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) format for Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) examinations until August 2027, offering relief to thousands of aspirants who had raised concerns over the proposed shift to online exams.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the decision on Thursday following repeated representations from student groups and competitive examination aspirants seeking additional time to prepare for the new system.
As per the revised plan, all MPSC examinations will continue to be conducted in the existing offline, pen-and-paper format until August 2027. The extended timeline is intended to help candidates become familiar with the digital examination process while allowing authorities to strengthen the infrastructure required for its implementation. The decision was taken during a review meeting held at Mantralaya in Mumbai and chaired by the Chief Minister. The meeting was attended by MPSC Chairman Vivek Bhimanwar and senior officials from the General Administration Department.
During the discussion, Fadnavis stressed the need to modernise the examination system to improve efficiency, reduce irregularities and ensure faster declaration of results. However, he said the transition to a new format should be carefully planned and executed without creating difficulties for candidates.
“A transparent, secure and timely recruitment process has always been a priority. Examinations should be conducted on schedule and results should be declared without unnecessary delays,” the Chief Minister said. He added that major reforms require sufficient preparation time for both candidates and institutions and that a gradual transition would ensure smoother implementation of the new system.
According to the government, introducing the CBT system from August 2027 onwards will provide aspirants with enough time to adjust to the digital format while enabling the MPSC and other agencies to put in place the required administrative and technical mechanisms.
The Chief Minister also directed the Commission to continue taking necessary institutional measures to strengthen the recruitment process and appreciated the MPSC for several reforms and initiatives undertaken in recent years.
