Arneja heart and multispecialty hospital (AHI), Nagpur has performed its second Trans Cathter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) case recently. Arneja Heart Hospital had introduced this new technique in central India when it did the first TAVR case two months back.
Announcing this in press release, Director of Arneja heart and multispeciality hospital, Dr. Jaspal Arneja, said that AHI has always been in forefront in the region while introducing latest technology in health care sector.
Trans Cathter Aortic Valve Replacement is a suture less procedure performed to replace damaged aortic valve and is a boon for patients with high surgical risk. As a part of the program, team of cardiologist at AHI lead by Dr. Jaspal Arneja performed this procedure that lasted for one and half hour and patient was shifted to wards immediately on second day and was roaming inwards without any signs and symptoms of discomfort.
Patient Laxmibai Khandare, 74 years old female, was a case of severe aortic stenosis that is quite common at that age due to heartvalve degeneration. But on top of that she had severe bronchial asthma and was totally steroid dependent for managing this asthma condition making her a extreme high risk case for open heart surgery. This clinical picture was the reason for her being rejected by heart hospitals for the surgery. Seeing the success of previous TAVR done few months back she approached AHI. She was thoroughly investigated and procedure was planned and performed with complete success.
Dr. Arneja said that aortic valve replacement has been conventionally done by performing an open-heart surgery which involves high risk for the patient besides a prolonged bed rest for recovery. The novel procedure TAVR is patient friendly with excellent results as it allows the patient to recover within 2 days.
Being a minimally invasive procedure, it is done through small puncture in the groin, with local anestheisia and conscious sedation period. Not only this procedure is a big boon for advanced age, those with moderate risk have also been included as suitable candidates for TAVR procedure.
Team of doctors with Dr. Arneja included Cardiologist Dr. Anmol Sonuwane from Jupitor, Mumbai, Cardiologists from AHI team Dr. Vivek Mandurke and Dr. Amar Amale, Cardiac Anesthetist Dr. Abhishek Wadaskar and nursing, technician and research team from AHI.
Dr. Arneja said that the cost of surgery is approximately 15 lakh (valve by Meril:- MYVAL) which was used in this patient and added that the success rate is approximately 95-100% depending upon expertise of the centre.
