Nagpur has regained its first position among 100 Smart Cities in the country in execution of central government’s much ambitious Smart City programme. Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL) topped the chart with 367.2 points overcoming Ahmedabad, which replaced Nagpur to bag first place in February in the smart city list.
The ministry of housing and urban affairs released the latest Smart City ranking of 100 cities on Friday. With a score of 367.42, Nagpur has outclassed many state capitals and major cities of the country.
The city continued its dominance in the list of Smart Cities despite poor financial condition of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The Orange City was not among the 20 cities selected in the first year under the Smart Cities Mission. A year later, the city managed to make it to the scheme.
When it comes to Smart City rankings, the city has been ranked first since the launch of rankings in May last year. Excluding two occasions, Nagpur has maintained first position over the last nine months. In February, Ahmedabad toppled it become no 1 smart city.
Earlier, Bhopal State capital of neighbouring Madhya Pradesh took the lead. At present, Ahmedabad is ranked 2 with 367.36 points while Bhopal is ranked third with 336.9 points, behind Surat, which was ranked second with 345.99 points. The remaining 98 cities are far behind Nagpur and Ahmedabad.
