Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Garden Department, have urged the people of Nagpur to give its suggestion regarding the transplantation of more than 500 trees from Bharat Van.
NMC asked the citizens for their suggestions and objections in the matter, within a span of one week. The transplantation of tress is being eyed by the General Manager (planning-II) of Maha Metro for a Development Planning (DP) road. The road will be 500 meters long and 18 meters wide.
Following this holler by the NMC, citizens of Nagpur and the Nature lovers have shown interest in a positive way and in numbers as well. The Garden Department of NMC has got more than 100 requests and letters signed by certain worried people from different areas and not just the residents staying nearby Bharat Van.
Dehmukh, a resident of Manewada has a very practical aspect to this condition, “This whole process of transplanting the trees is happening on the basis of a developmental agenda and which is even acceptable at some point, but this being said, when the trees are being shifted to another area the responsible person has to even come up with an alternative to keep the situation balanced and undisturbedâ€
Deshmukh even suggests that the construction of Metro and the developmental plans have just highlighted the issues, while such problems has been in effect from the citizens side lately rather, even before the construction started.
Some citizens when approached by TLN, on the condition of anonymity, said this could have a political background. According to these people, if all the trees are shifted totally, there is a high chance of half of them being dead midway.
The residents are seen cutting down a whole, full grown tree which used to have a large diameter gave a shady space to many stray animals and even spread its coolness in its surrounding area during the time of summer and winter, in simple words had a great positive effect on the ecological structure.
People in oppose have even added, the trees work as a lung in the natural ecosystem of the area and play an important role in holding the water level of Futala Lake. These are the only shelter for thousands of birds and cutting down these trees could have a hefty negative impact over the environment of not only Bharat Van but on the whole city.
