The city continues to battle rising violent crime, with the city recording 52 murders between January and June 2025, translating to nearly one murder every three days. Despite the alarming frequency, the Nagpur Police achieved a 100% detection rate, successfully identifying and arresting all accused involved in the homicide cases.
The first six months of the year also saw 77 cases of attempted murder, with police arresting 271 suspects. Of these, 76 cases have been solved, while one case remains under investigation, police officials confirmed.
April marked the deadliest month with 13 murders, resulting in 14 deaths, while January and May also reported high murder counts. A detailed analysis revealed that domestic disputes — particularly those linked to suspicions of infidelity and extramarital relationships — were the leading causes. Other motives included gang rivalries, personal enmity, and spur-of-the-moment violence.
Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal, who has been at the forefront of law enforcement in the city, said:
“While a majority of murders were due to domestic conflicts, gang-related incidents also contributed to the figures. In all cases, Nagpur Police acted swiftly to ensure the accused were arrested and brought to justice. No one who takes the law into their own hands will be spared.”
In response to internal lapses, Commissioner Singal also initiated disciplinary action against erring officers, including suspensions and transfers, to reinforce departmental accountability.
The city’s police force has also been engaged in large-scale operations, including ‘Operation Thunder 2025’, a major anti-drug campaign aimed at curbing substance abuse and associated criminal activities across Nagpur.
Despite the challenges, the 100% murder case detection rate has emerged as a strong testament to the police department’s focused investigation efforts and swift action, setting a notable benchmark in crime detection.
As Nagpur moves into the second half of 2025, police officials have urged citizens to remain alert and cooperate with law enforcement to maintain peace and security across the city.
