With multiple infrastructure and development projects underway across Nagpur, Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar has directed all government departments and agencies to obtain prior permission from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) before carrying out any excavation work in the city.
To improve coordination among various executing agencies and prevent damage to underground utilities, the Municipal Commissioner convened a meeting of representatives from concerned departments at the NMC headquarters on Friday.
During the meeting, Dr Itankar said that all agencies undertaking road digging or excavation for development works would be required to secure approval from the municipal administration before commencing work. He also announced that an online portal would be developed to streamline the permission process and facilitate better coordination among departments.
Senior officials from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), National Highways Authority and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), among other departments, attended the meeting. Chief Engineer, Superintending Engineer Dr Shweta Banerjee, Manoj Talewar, Rituraj Jadhav, Rajesh Dupare and other officials were present.
The city is currently witnessing work on major projects such as the Nag River Rejuvenation Project, the AMRUT scheme and several other infrastructure initiatives being executed by various government agencies.
Officials pointed out that excavation activities often damage underground utilities such as water pipelines, electricity cables and telecommunication lines, leading to service disruptions and inconvenience to citizens. To avoid such incidents, the Municipal Commissioner directed all departments and agencies to submit GPS-based maps of underground utility networks and cable alignments laid by them.
Dr Itankar warned that strict action would be taken against any department or agency carrying out excavation work without obtaining prior approval from the municipal corporation.
