Sir Garfield Sobers, widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers in history, has passed away at the age of 89. The legendary West Indies all-rounder died at his home in Barbados, just two weeks shy of his 90th birthday.
He is survived by his sons, Daniel and Matthew, and his adopted daughter, Genevieve. Sobers represented the West Indies between 1954 and 1974, playing 93 Test matches and redefining the role of an all-rounder with his extraordinary brilliance in batting, bowling, and fielding.
A cricketer far ahead of his era, Sobers possessed unparalleled versatility. He could bowl left-arm fast-medium, orthodox spin, wrist spin, and off-spin with equal effectiveness. He also etched his name in history as the first player to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket.
With the bat, Sobers was fearless and dominant. He amassed 8,032 Test runs at an outstanding average of 57.78, including 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries. His unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958 became the highest individual Test score at the time—a world record that remained unbeaten for 36 years.
His impact extended beyond batting. Sobers claimed 235 Test wickets at an average of 34.03, adapting his bowling to suit any conditions. In the field, he was equally exceptional, taking 109 catches with remarkable athleticism. Knighted in 1975, he also captained the West Indies in 39 Test matches.
Paying tribute to Sobers, Sunil Gavaskar once said: “The greatest all-rounder that I saw was Sir Garfield Sobers because he could change the game with the bat, the ball, or by taking an incredible catch. The number of matches he turned with both bat and ball is why he was the greatest all-rounder I have ever seen.”
His enduring legacy was further cemented in 2004 when the International Cricket Council (ICC) asked a panel comprising Sunil Gavaskar, Richie Benaud, and Michael Holding to choose the namesake for its highest individual honour. Their unanimous choice was Sir Garfield Sobers, giving birth to the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, awarded annually to the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year.
