The Rajya Magasvargiya Vidyut Karmachari Sanghatna has announced a state-wide strike on July 9 to protest the Maharashtra government’s move to grant parallel electricity distribution licences to private firms in several cities. The union claims the decision could severely impact the financial stability of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MahaVitaran).
Calling the move an attempt to economically dismantle MahaVitaran, the union has likened the situation to the decline of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which led to massive job losses. According to the union, a similar outcome could jeopardize the livelihoods of over 55,000 employees currently working under the state-run power utility.
Reports suggest that the Adani Group has sought distribution licences for Navi Mumbai, Bhandup, Mulund, Panvel, Kharghar, Taloja, and Uran. Torrent Power has applied to operate in Nagpur, Vasai, Virar, Kalyan, and other regions, while Tata Power has also submitted applications for distribution in various cities.
The union has warned that opening the sector to private players without protective measures for the state utility could lead to long-term consequences for public sector employment and affordable power access in Maharashtra.
