Two spells of heavy showers in the city over the last 48 hours have exposed the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s preparedness before the onset of monsoon. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Nagpur has received 74 mm rainfall by July 1.
Several lakhs of rupees were spent in pre-monsoon preparation by the NMC. Special drive was launched to clean the drainage, nullahs, etc. to ensure that people do not have to face inconvenience due to water logging. However, a few hours of rains on Saturday and Sunday exposed all the tall claims of the NMC with most of the roads getting submerged.
The denizens of Hudkeshwar, Yashodhara Nagar, Manewada, Anant Nagar faced problem due to inundated roads. Incomplete developmental works also caused problem to people. Cement road construction is underway in many areas at slow pace. Roads have been dug for road, metro and flyovers, all of which are incomplete. Water got deposited in the pits caused due to digging. Chocked drains and severe lines also caused water stagnation on roads at Shri Krishnanagar, Wathoda layout, Shivaji Nagar. Locals had to wade through the water logged roads to reach their home amid heavy downpour.
On the positive side, monsoon rains that arrived after a prolonged delay, brought cheers among the people who were reeling under water scarcity. On Saturday, Nagpur had received 26.2 mm rains, which was highest rainfall of June this year. Intermittent showers also brought the mercury down to 33.8 degree Celsius which was below the average normal temperature. Minimum temperature too went down making night pleasant and cool.
Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall in the region in the next three days.
