The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) had issued the orders to de-recognize the Maharaj Bagh zoo of the city under the control of Agriculture College. The decision was taken by the Central Zoo Authority as despite giving repeated warnings the Maharaj Bagh Zoo administration did not take any steps to fulfill the terms of the CZA. However the Maharaj Bagh Zoo authorities had approached the Central forest and pollution departments.
According to the sources, forests and pollution department has now granted stay over the order of CZA. As a result, the risk of closing the only zoo in the city has been averted for time being. The Maharaj Bagh administration has been notified to send a revised plan.
Maharaj Bagh Zoo was established in the city in 1894. Subsequently the responsibility of the management of the zoo was handed over to the Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Agricultural University and Agricultural College, who has been managing the zoo, ever since. However, the CZA had taken the decision to withdraw the recognition of the zoo as the management of Maharaj Bagh was not taking due steps of fulfilling the requirements.
As per the information received, Maharajbagh Zoo management had claimed that the decision to withdraw the recognition was inappropriate as the management has been fulfilling its responsibility but there has been some shortage of manpower and other problems for which certain demands were forwarded to CZA.
The forest and environment department opined that there has been no decision over this demand and hence the stay was granted. The in-charge of Maharajbagh Zoo Dr Sunil Bawaskar had informed that now more stress will be given on fulfilling the requirements suggested by the CZA.
