The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Nagpur has launched a week long nation-wide protest to mark their support, against the National Medical Commission (NMC) bill 2019. It may be noted that the bill has been tabled in LokSabha on Monday. The NDA government and doctors’ fraternity from all States have braced for a major showdown, over the issue of bill.
IMA, has been fighting against the bill for over past 2 years. They alleged that Health Minister did not bother to include various key recommendations and suggestions made by the Parliament Standing Committee, but instead, brought many clauses that are detrimental to the doctors’ fraternity, mainly young doctors and medical students and even to those pursuing medical education dream.
Dr Kush Jhunjhunwala, president IMA Nagpur, said that NMC bill would severely affected the interest of medical students in the country. “This bill is clearly anti-poor, anti-federal and anti Students, he added. At the protest, representatives of undergraduates students from Govt. Medical College and Hospital, Indira Gandhi Govt. Medical College, NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences and DMIMS Sawangi (Meghe) participated.
IMA declared some of the clause from the bill, that are highly objectionable, such as commission has 80 percent appointed members with no place for transparency. Also, bill says that the secretary of the commission is going to be a bureaucrat, meaning a person not from medical profession background. There is fee capping for only 50 percent seats, in private medical colleges thus giving scope for tuition fees to touch high rates which will affect the poor meritorious students to dream for medicine studies. Along with this, unscientific bridge course, likely temporary registration for foreign nationals and others are some of the points, IMA disagree with.
Nationwide protest has been planned by IMA HQ throughout India and massive Andolan and March has been planned at New Delhi on Monday the July 29, 2019. Dr Ashok Adhao, Dr. Milind Naik, Dr. Y.S.Deshpande, Dr. Krishna Parate, Dr. Sanjay Deshpande, Dr. Anand Kate, Dr. Prakash Deo, Dr. Anil Laddhad, Dr. Manjusha Giri, Dr. Archana Kothari, Dr.Ajay Kate, Dr Vandana Kate, Dr. Ashish Disawal, Dr. Rafat Khan, Dr. Alok Umre, Dr. Archana Deshpande, Dr. Aniruddha Deoke were prominently present during the protest.
