The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is gearing up to compete with the private travels operators. For this the corporation is now working to upgrade its buses. Efforts are on to do away with the old and damaged buses, which are a blot on the reputation of MSRTC. It is learnt that MSRTC would soon replace all its old aluminum body buses, which make too much noise and are not comfortable, with the steel body buses. Nearly 1000 buses would be modified. This would make the journey on ST buses more comfortable and safer.
According to sources, Central workshops at Hingna, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Pune have taken up the task to upgrade the old buses. It is expected that the aluminum body buses would soon be made a history and all such buses would be modified into steel body buses.
Experts said, aluminum body was more prone to damage. During mishaps, body of ST buses suffers severe damage due to the use of aluminum. Vibration in aluminum panel also cause inconvenience to the passengers. Steel body buses are free from these problems. Since, the body would be stronger the extent of damage would be less and chances of injuries to passengers too would reduce. Seats filled on the steel body buses too are more durable and comfortable.
The MSRTC was considering replacing the aluminum body buses for a long. It is learnt that the work to modify the body is underway for the last three years and is expected to complete soon. Some of the ST buses have already been modified. Sources said, diesel consumption has increased on modified buses. However, experts said, ensuring passengers safety at the cost of additional expenses of fuel due to minor dip in mileage is a good deal.
