The Nagpur Traffic Police have introduced revised speed limits for different categories of vehicles across the city as part of a road safety initiative to reduce speeding and fatal accidents. The new speed limits came into effect on July 17 and will remain on a one-month trial basis until August 16, 2026.
The revised limits have been notified by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar following directions from the Additional Director General of Police (Traffic), Maharashtra. The initiative aims to reduce road accidents and fatalities by 10 per cent every year.
Officials said the decision was taken in view of Nagpur’s growing population, rising number of vehicles, newly built cement roads and the expansion of the city’s road network, including the Inner Ring Road and Outer Ring Road. The previous speed limit notification issued on March 9, 2017, has been withdrawn.
The Traffic Police have warned that motorists violating the revised speed limits will face strict action.
Road safety experts have also stressed that higher speeds greatly increase the risk of fatal accidents, especially those involving pedestrians, cyclists, children and senior citizens.
