The city is ready to witness the first bash of monsoon, all over the city preparations can be seen taking charge for friendship day. From cafes having arrangements to pool party announcements have been in talks amongst the youth.
It is not just that the youth are excited about this day but even the adults have got few interesting plans on this day. Sunil Sawalkar, an architect by profession has planned his day out with his friends and their family at a villa and enjoy the occasion with a lavish barbecue.
Dr Ramon Artemio Bracho, proposed the idea of friendship day, in 1958, when he was out on a dinner date with his friends. This dinner with his friends gave rise to World Friendship Crusade. World Friendship Crusade is a foundation that promotes friendship and fosters care among all humans regardless of their race, religion, and ethnicity.
The UN has declared International Friendship day on July 30, however, some countries including India, Mexico, Pakistan, Spain etc. have their own dates or a specific day for this celebration.
However, reports also suggest that it was Hallmark Greeting cards founder Joyce Hall who coined the term in 1930. The day was consciously pronounced to cherish friendship and value the people in our life.
This year the countries including India and others will be celebrating friendship day on August 4, which is the date falling on the first Sunday of August. And just like every year friends commemorate the day by exchanging gifts, planning outings and various entertaining activities to reunite and celebrate their years of friendship.
People in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and South American countries, celebrate the day by gifting each other colourful friendship bands and flowers. However, one must remember International Friendship Day is a UN observance and not a public holiday.
