Kiran Makode and his partner Ashutosh Peshawar displaying nerves of steel performed remarkably to defeat Stan Lange & Andres Steenkjaer of Denmark in three tough fought games 21-17, 18- 21, 22-20 in the BWF World Senior Badminton Championship being played at Spodek Arena, Katowice, Poland.
Kiran and Ashutosh started well and won the first game 21-17. However Stan and Andres bounced back in the second game and won 21-18. Third game was toughly contested with both sides trying it s best to out do another. At break Kiran & Ashutosh led 11-10. However Danish pair bounced back took excellent lead of 19-16. Kiran & Ashutosh levelled at 19. However Danish pair took one crucial point and led 20 19 ( match point). Displaying excellent fighting spirit Kiran & Ashutosh leveled at 20 and then went on to win next two points & won the third game and match 22 20.
Now in the next round Kiran & Ashutosh will play against third seeded Mikael Nilsson & Ulf Svensson of Sweden. While in singles Kiran will play against Pavel Shorin of Russia. The world famous Spodek Arena has 29 professional badminton courts out of which matches are being played at 12 courts. A record number of 1509 players from across the global are participating in this prestigious World Championship which is held once in 2 years. City’s Kiran V Makode is participating for the record 5th time which no other player from the city has done before.
