CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) has organised a three day workshop on ‘Environmental Modeling: Resolving Complexity for a Predictable Tomorrow’ from August 7 to 9. In this workshop, science models based on the given topic will be presented and explained.
Addressing the participants, Vinodkumar Tiwari, Member (Law & Groundwater), Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority described the genesis and role of Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority (MWRRA). He said, Maharashtra is the first state in India having MWRRA for water resources development and management in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Tiwari further stated that MWRRA is looking at ways to bring in category-based measurement of water usage as there is no accurate measure or regulation for usage of fresh water for agricultural and industrial purposes, which leads to considerable water wastage or excessive water withdrawal. He also urged the scientists to implement the concept of big data which will be instrumental to encourage and ensure more responsible water usage in the country through measurement, auditing and possible pricing mechanisms.
Mathematical modeling is an experimental approach where a problem is solved and continually refined over time in order to be more efficient, faster or more accurate, said Dr. R N Singh, Visiting Professor, IIT Gandhinagar and Former Director, CSIR-NEERI. Singh advised the scientists to break up the complexity of a problem in various parts and then deal this problem through mathematical modeling to make it simpler.
This approach may be used to provide solutions to various environmental problems, he added. While emphasizing the importance of reductionism in problem solving, Singh said that complex problems can be simplified in a way that makes them easier to understand. Everyone should understand linear dynamics and algebra to solve a problem, he added. He also briefed about the importance of artificial intelligence.
