Google is honoring Tabei on Sunday with an animated Doodle on her birth anniversary. this time the six letters in Google have been replaced with seven peaks being conquered by a cartoon version of Tabei.
Junko Tabei was a Japanese mountaineer. She was the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, located between Nepal and China and the first woman to ascend all the Seven Summits by climbing the highest peak on every continent.
She told Sports Illustrated in a 1996 interview that she would be more than happy to be referred to as “the 36th person to climb Everest.â€
Born in Fukushima as the fifth daughter in a family of seven children, she began climbing mountains at a very young age.
She was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and died on 20 October 2016.
