In a shocking incident, five police personnel of Nandanvan Police Station were suspended by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone IV Nirmala Devi on Tuesday after mephedrone (MD) drug and cash of Rs 2.45 lakh was seized from their possession.
An offence under Sections 22(b), 29(b) and 59(a) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 was registered against the policemen and two drug peddlers Jamal and Javed on the basis of complaint filed by Vijay Dhapawkar, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Sakkardara Division.
Suspended policemen have been identified as Constable Sachin Emprediwar, Rajendra Sirbhate, Dilip Awgan, Roshan Nimbarte, Abhay Marode.
According to the sources, the police personnel had nabbed a drug dealer Jamal from Nandanvan area on October 14 and had seized the MD drug from his possession. But Jamal somehow managed to escape from the police custody. Later, another drug peddler Javed met the accused police personnel and gave Rs 2.45 lakh for not arresting Jamal. The policemen are accused of keeping the cash and the drug in the cupboard.
Senior police officers are conducting an inquiry in the matter to find the role of other policemen in the case. Â A police official said that the policemen were arrested after registration of the case and produced in the court. The police obtained three days custody of the accused.
