Awareness rally by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Nagpur was taken demanding to take stern action against those who violate the law (sellers and users) even after a complete ban on the use / sale of nylon manja and to prevent accidents caused by manja. Shrikant Shivankar, City Spokesperson while talking to The Live Nagpur said, “Nylon Manja causes injuries to animals during Sankranti. If the Manja gets stuck in the road, on a tree or anywhere else, it can endanger the lives of the citizens. As a result, many civilians and birds have been seriously injured. Many people have lost their lives due to this artificial Manja.â€
He added that the use of nylon Manja has resulted in over a hundred civilian injuries in the past year. However, the nylon manja is still being sold secretly. In Nagpur, the NCP has been campaigning against nylon manja form many years and during the last Sankranti, awareness was created against the use of nylon manja. So to some extent the use of this manja was restricted.
Although the district administration has banned the use of ‘nylon’ thread, which is endangering the lives of birds and people, it is being sold in a clandestine manner, endangering the lives of birds, animals and human beings and therefore strict action was required.
Letter of request in this regard is given to Home Minister Anil Deshmukh to take stern action against the violators (sellers and users) as per Section 304, 336, 337, 338 of the IPC and to cooperate for the protection of life. In this context, Janajagruti Abhiyan was launched on January 12 from Sakkardara Chowk to Shukravari Road. At the public awareness rally, kite shopkeepers and citizens on the streets were sensitized about the damage caused by nylon thread manja and requested not to sell them and purchase. Shrikant Shivankar and former corporator Ashok Katle organised this rally. Youth President Shailendra Tiwari, Women President Lakshmi Savarkar, Student President Ravi Parate, Mehboob Pathan, Eknath Falke, Azhar Patel, Aditya Mendhekar, Indira Saini and party functionaries were present on the occasion in large number.
