The craze for vehicle numbers of own choice is growing day by day. People are now looking at it as a hobby to buy fancy number plates and vehicle number of own choice for vehicles. The Minister of Road and Transport, Government of India and the Regional Transport Offices conducts auctions for the choice of number on the registration plate of newly bought vehicles. The prices of number plates range from 10,000 to 4,00,000 lakh.
During the last 10 months, RTO Nagpur Rural collected 22,29,000 by issuing own choice vehicle registration number plates. According to RTO, numbers like 1111, 2222, etc are auctioned for 50-70,000. Special numbers like 0009, 0099, 0789 etc can cost up to 1.5 lakhs. Recently RTO auctioned 0001 number in 4,00,000. People also use these fancy numbers to write some names or abbreviations such as ‘8055 is written as BOSS’ which is illegal.
