The Directorate of Animal Husbandry, Maharashtra Government made the registration for pet shops compulsory. People have any animal or bird at home, will also have to register themselves or have to face legal action if registration has not been done.
In order to prevent the illegal trade of pet animals and birds, shops have been asked to complete the registration process.
Central Government’s Animal Welfare Board on May 1, 2020, had notified certain guidelines under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules, 2017) and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pet Shop) Rules, 2018.
But due to lack of awareness and a later coronavirus pandemic, this process got stalled. The powers of registration and legal action have been given to the office of the animal welfare commissioner.
According to the guidelines issued by the government, pet shops should have enough space for movement. Proper ventilation, good food, and provision of water should be provided. Implementation of the following scientific process by breeders.
There are many illegal pet shops while many are operating from homes and selling pet animals and birds. Once registered provisional permission will be given to these shops and their information will be sent to the state animal welfare board.
