The decision on drawing insurance policy for all the students of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University is likely to be finalized in a few days. However, the University is taking this decision based only on a single proposal from an insurance company and not by inviting quotations from others.
The sources in the University have stated that the proposal is being finalized through an insurance agent. The insurance agent is being ‘helped’ by a senior officer of the University.
Although commission of then insurance agent is not a burden on the University, as it is paid by the insurance company, involvement of a university officer leads to suspicion about corruption in the system.
RTMNU’s decision to insure all its students was an innovative and welcome decision. However, the manner in which the deal is being finalized, needs careful scrutiny.
The agent is sure to earn huge money out of commission for drawing insurance of over 3.50 lakh students. The agent will be an asset to the insurance company. The issue of hard work by the insurance agent is not of concern for the University. But involvement of any University employee in it, is under the scanner.
The sources did not reveal the name of the University officer(s). It is the matter of investigation, by the University authorities.
