The 23-year-old Neeraj Chopra made the nation proud by winning India’s first Gold medal in the men’s javelin throw final at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2020.
India’s biggest gold medal hope was finally achieved on Saturday after a gap of twelve years.
This is the first time India won Gold in Javelin throw. He has become the first Indian athlete to win Gold ever. In the finals, he covered his highest of 87.58m (in the second of six attempts). After a hundred years-long wait, India got gold in athletics.
Previously on 11 August 2008, Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal in the men’s 10 m air rifle. It was a huge achievement for India at the Olympic games shooting event. Since then India had won silver and Bronze only.
In 2012 India won six medals in total two Silver, four Bronze at the London 2012 Summer Olympics. In 2016 India won only two medals one silver one Bronze. Today India broke their best-ever medal tally of London 2012 by winning another medal and first gold today at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
