The jilted lover using wielding gun in the premises of Government Medical College and Hospital on Monday, is an issue more of uncontrolled use (?) of social media, than of security in Government Medical Colleges.
The accused in the case Vicky and Priyanka became friends on facebook. Vicky projected himself as a businessman and made advances. Initially Priyanka befriended him and later started distancing herself from him, as per statement recorded by the police.
Enraged over her behaviour of ‘not talking to him’, Vicky took this extreme step to either eliminate her or threaten her.
The incident was shocking. The doctors and students, who are consistently demanding security for them in the premises, reiterated their demand. It is true that the doctors, particularly in government hospitals are facing wrath of people. Recently a resident doctor from Government Medical College, yavatmal was murdered.
Besides the issue of security of doctors and medical students, serious issues like murders and sexual offences are increasing, involving social media. Facebook friendship is often stated as beginning of such incidents.
Uncontrolled use of social media has led to increasing number of cheating in love affairs, financial frauds, sexual exploitation, human trafficking etc. Unfortunately majority of those who fall prey to these frauds are either children below 18 years of age or senior citizens, who are not very conversant with the electronic gadgets and modern technology.
