PhD, NET no more mandatory for teaching in Universities, colleges

To teach at universities and colleges, a PhD and NET exam will no longer be required. Through lateral entrance into higher educational institutions, the UGC will provide opportunities for experts in industry and other professions to become instructors.

Professors of Practice will be their titles. Professorial appointments will now be made in two ways: first, after finishing a PhD or passing the NET exam, and second, by lateral entry.

According to UGC Chairman Prof M Jagadesh Kumar, the new education policy proposes that higher educational institutions and industry collaborate. That is why this proposal has been discussed in the meeting of the vice-chancellors of the central universities.

A committee has been constituted to work on this plan. It will report after working on various stakeholders and possibilities. Based on that, the proposal will be sent to the ministry of education. However, amendments will have to be made in the UGC Regulations 2018.

At present, 10,000 posts of teachers and non-teachers are vacant across the country. To overcome this problem, UGC is going to make a centralised portal. On this, all universities and colleges will have to give advertisements for recruitment on vacant posts.

With this, the candidates. will apply in one place. This will save time and money Second, by having one application, all the universities will opt the information of all the eligible candidates
