Ranil Vickremesinghe has been elected new President of Sri Lanka on Wednesday. He was Prime Minister of the island nation, after resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa and officiating President following Gotabaya Rajapaksa left the post.
Sri Lanka has been facing severe economic and political crises. Following violent demonstrations against Mahinda and Gotabaya, who had to tender resignations, the parliamentarians elected Wickremesinghe as their new President. He was polled 134 votes.
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) candidate Dullas Alhapperuma and leftist Janata Vimukti Perammuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Disanayake got 82 and three votes respectively.
After getting elected Wickremesinghe said that the nation is going through a very critical situation and all together will work to rise from the situation.
