Two doctors of the Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College (GMC) in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal were assaulted and stabbed by a patient on Thursday night.
One of the doctors is injured severely and is undergoing surgery.
The victims have been identified as Dr JB Stan Paul and Dr Abhishek Jha. They are both first year residents in general surgery. The victims were inspecting patients in the ward as usual when a patient attacked them.
The resident doctors association has declared a strike after the attack on the resident doctors. According to a statement by the association, “During the evening rounds on January 5 at around 7:30 pm in GMC Yavatmal, a patient out of nowhere assaulted and stabbed a first year resident of general surgery with a knife on the neck and injured him badly. Two surgery residents are injured in the attack, out of which one is severely injured and is undergoing operation. We have declared a strike.”
Enraged by this incident, trainee doctors staged a dharna on the hospital premises. The doctors raised slogans against the Yavatmal police and demanded the removal of the dean.
As soon as the information about the incident was received, the Yavatmal city police reached the spot. According to a police officer, Nand Kumar Pant, “A patient admitted to the dispensary attacked a doctor. The police has taken him into custody. The rest of the investigation has been started.”
