As a result of the hospital’s workload, the nurses at Mayo have decided to strike and protest the ‘Kam Bandh Andolan’. According to sources, they have recently had to work in double shifts due to the addition of two new wards.
A source told The Live Nagpur that “We are forcefully called at the hospital by the senior officers saying it’s an emergency. A total of 1,100 nurses are required to care for the patients, but we currently have only 250-200. No new nurses have been hired since 2018. We have a lot of weight on our shoulders. We have submitted a proposal to the higher- authority to hire more nurses.”
Furthermore, “the Matron is also on leave,” giving the officers more opportunities to make us work extra hours. As nurses, we believe we are being taken advantage of. On average, when a hospital opens a new ward, 30 new nurses must be hired. We all have to work long hours because there is so little manpower.”
“Whenever there is a round of the Medical Council, the seniors display fake patients to make a good impression,” the source continued. There are currently no nurses on duty at the hospital. If the authorities accept our proposal, we will call off the strike.”
