In a major step towards ending pollution and further deterioration of Ambazari Lake water, the Wadi Municipal Council (WMC) has decided to install a sewage treatment plant (STP) to stop untreated waste water discharge into the lake.
As per media reports, disclosing the new development, WMC chief executive officer (CEO) Vijay Deshmukh said, “Work on installing the STP at Wadi has already begun. WMC has also chalked out a plan to cash in on the treated sewage water by supplying it to Hingna MIDC for a fee.”
“The STP is being installed near a cremation ground close to Ambedkar Nagar, from where most of the sewage enters the lake. The sludge from the treated sewage would be used to manufacture fertilizer. The operation and maintenance of the STP would be a good source of revenue for the municipal council,” WMC chief executive officer (CEO) Vijay Deshmukh said. “Work on installing the STP at Wadi has already begun. WMC has also chalked out a plan to cash in on the treated sewage water by supplying it to Hingna MIDC for a fee.”
This development came following the firm objection from Abhijeet Chaudhari, the commissioner of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), against the unregulated release of sewage water into Ambazari Lake. Additionally, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) too has moved to the district court, against WMC over this issue.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is tackling pollution and weed issues in Ambazari Lake. So far, 950 truckloads of weeds have been cleared. The WMC move follows after the body received 84 crore from the state government under the Maharashtra Suvarna Jayanti Nagarotthan Abhiyan mainly for strengthening the sewage system and installing a sewage treatment plant (STP). WMC is also working on a 72km sewer network, with 16km sewer lines has already been completed. The project is expected to be finished in 18 months.
