Divyanshu Gautam, a final-year student studying Computer Science Engineering (CSE) at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology Nagpur (VNIT), was found deceased by hanging in the college’s boys’ hostel, as per the police on Thursday.
According to police sources, some students complained about a bad odor emanating from Gautam’s room. Gautam had also not been seen for the last couple of days. Sensing something amiss, students informed the college administration. Subsequently, college staff gained entry by breaking the latch of the door and found Gautam lying on the floor.
The police believe that Gautam might have taken his own life a few days before by hanging himself. They think that the clothes he used tore apart due to his weight, which caused him to fall to the floor.
The deceased is a resident of Bihar. The dead body of the student has been sent to the medical college for post-mortem. The police have informed that a suicide note has written stating that no one should be held responsible for death. On getting information from the teachers, it is estimated that he may have committed suicide in depression due to low marks in some subjects.
A case of accidental death has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing.
