The Ambazari Police have registered a case against a woman cashier of RTM Nagpur University, who defrauded the university of more than ₹44 lakhs. She embezzled funds by illegally updating 439 receipts in the university’s software.
The accused woman has been identified as Babita Nitin Masram (40). She is a junior clerk at the university and works as a cashier at the cash counter.
The fraud came to light in 2023 when a receipt submitted by M.K. Builder for the refund of a security deposit amounting to ₹34,160 was checked by the finance department. It was discovered that the original receipt was for only ₹4,160, but it had been modified in 2022 using Babita Masram’s login ID. When Harish Paliwal, Finance and Accounts Officer of the university, questioned Masram, she claimed that the modification was a mistake and deposited ₹30,000 into the university’s account. However, Paliwal became suspicious and reviewed the receipts issued under her user ID. It was then revealed that she had modified 439 receipts and defrauded the university of ₹44.40 lakhs.
Following a complaint by Paliwal, a case of fraud has been registered against Masram at Ambazari Police Station.
