A notorious gang from Wardha, specializing in pickpocketing politicians during election rallies, was apprehended by Sitabuldi police. Five suspects, identified as Jayant Rambhau Kalambe (33), Nandkishor Madhukar Satghare (32), Durgadas Ashok Ade (30), Bhushan Vitthalrao Devatre (35), and Dinesh Subhash Solanke (36), were caught red-handed, and authorities recovered cash and valuables worth approximately Rs 2.25 lakh, along with two motorcycles.
On Tuesday, as Congress candidate Vikas Thakre led a rally for nomination filing, the gang infiltrated the crowd near Samvidhan Square, targeting unsuspecting attendees. Congress leaders Raman Paigwar and Rajendra Dhurve lost Rs 30,000 to the pickpockets but quickly alerted police, resulting in the suspects’ swift detention. The gang is known for attending political rallies, public gatherings, and high-profile events, where they deploy their expertise to evade even the most vigilant eyes.
The group has a history of thefts in Nagpur, and Durgadas Ade also faces a murder charge. Reports indicate they committed similar thefts at another political rally last week, with many victims choosing not to report the incidents due to embarrassment or minor losses. The arrests serve as a warning to political leaders and event-goers to remain cautious amid rising thefts at public gatherings.
