On the first day of the winter session, the state government made a significant move to curb environmental damage caused by illegal tree felling. Presenting the bill in the assembly on Monday, the government announced an increase in the fine for illegal tree cutting from ₹1,000 to ₹50,000. The government is confident that raising the fine by 500 times will effectively deter illegal tree felling.
Minister Chandrakant Patil introduced the bill in the Assembly on Monday. While presenting the bill, Patil stated that after its passage, tree branches can be cut without requiring prior permission.
According to the bill, an ordinance was issued on September 6, 2024, and now the bill is being given legal form by introducing it in the Assembly. The bill highlights that the earlier low fine did not instill fear among people, which encouraged them to cut down trees without hesitation. With the passage of this bill, the government believes it will create a sense of fear and discourage illegal tree felling.
The bill also states that it will help in successfully controlling environmental damage caused by illegal tree felling.
Two Years Jail for Drinking Alcohol in Historical Forts
Along with protecting the environment, the state government has also focused on preserving Maharashtra’s historical forts. Minister Chandrakant Patil introduced a bill in this regard on Monday. While presenting the bill, Patil stated that the government will now take strict action against those consuming alcohol at historical forts. The bill includes a provision for a fine of ₹1 lakh and imprisonment of up to two years for violators.
