In a shocking turn of events, the Principal of the Government Nursing Training College was reportedly attacked by the parents of students after accusations surfaced that he had demanded sexual favours in exchange for increasing marks.
The college, which operates under the District Government Hospital, caters to approximately 200 female students. According to sources, five students who had failed last year appeared for a re-examination on November 5, 6, and 8. Allegedly, Principal Kiran Murkut reached out to two of the students through text messages, inquiring about their exams. When the students expressed concerns about their results, Murkut is said to have offered to help increase their marks, requesting sexual favours in return.
Although Murkut deleted the messages shortly after, one of the students had already taken a screenshot of the conversation, which was later shared with authorities. The incident has sparked outrage, leading to the assault on the principal by the parents. An investigation is underway.
On Thursday, after a student informed her parents about the incident, they, along with social workers, arrived at the college. A heated argument with Principal Kiran Murkut escalated into a scuffle in front of Civil Surgeon Dr. Deepchand Soyyam and other officials. Police detained the principal after sealing the classroom. The lack of CCTV cameras on the campus has raised concerns about student safety, especially with the girls’ hostel located 1 km away. The investigation is ongoing.
