The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), in collaboration with Kerala-based Keltron and the city’s traffic police, has shortlisted 10 key locations for the pilot phase of the Rs197 crore Intelligent and Integrated Traffic Management System (IITMS). According to media report, the pilot project is set to be completed by April, paving the way for citywide implementation aimed at modernizing traffic control and reducing congestion.
The locations were selected based on a survey supervised by deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Archit Chandak. The project will introduce AI-powered adaptive traffic signals, replacing traditional timers with real-time vehicle flow adjustments. This system is expected to reduce travel time by 28% to 48% and increase average speeds by 46% to 62%.
During the pilot phase, speed radars and LED-based video messaging signages will be installed at select junctions. After a successful trial, the system will expand to all 161 traffic signals, with full implementation set to be completed within 10 months.
IITMS will integrate technologies like automatic number plate recognition, red-light violation detection, and a centralised command centre. CCTV cameras at major junctions will provide real-time data to an AI-powered control hub, monitoring key corridors and issuing automatic e-challans for traffic violations.
To ensure a smooth rollout, NMC, Keltron, and traffic police are coordinating with agencies like NHAI, state PWD, and NIT to map underground utilities and prevent damage during cable-laying. Once permissions are secured, material procurement and installation will begin. Keltron, the project’s master integrator, will design, install, and maintain the system for five years.
Slated for completion in 15 months, the project will integrate Nagpur’s existing Smart City infrastructure, including CCTV networks, to optimize costs and efficiency. Sensor-based traffic signals will enhance flow, especially during emergencies or peak congestion. The AI-driven system will also simulate traffic scenarios to predict and address issues like accidents or protests in real time.
This state-funded initiative aims to make Nagpur’s traffic system smarter and more efficient, easing congestion and improving road safety.
