With the rising fascination for exotic pets—often fueled by social media—many individuals in the city are acquiring and keeping such animals without valid permits. Addressing this concern, Zone 3 police, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mahak Swami, launched a special operation on Wednesday, conducting raids at two locations in Kotwali and Pachpaoli following a tip-off.
Police Raids Uncover Exotic Pets:
During the crackdown, police raided a pet shop in Kotwali after reports surfaced about two pythons being kept without authorization. Authorities immediately alerted forest department officials, who used the PARIVESH app to verify the shop owner’s credentials. A Mahal resident and the shop’s proprietor, was found to possess all the required documents for keeping the pythons legally.
Despite this, police sources and wildlife experts believe that many exotic animals in the city are being kept without proper authorization, indicating potential violations of wildlife laws.
Legal Challenges in Exotic Animal Ownership:
Although the trade of exotic animals is permitted in India, it requires valid documentation, including import papers, purchase receipts, transfer documents, and customs duty clearance. Experts highlight that while owning Indian wildlife species is strictly prohibited, non-native exotic animals can be kept legally if registered. However, the cumbersome registration process on the PARIVESH app often deters pet owners from completing the necessary formalities.
Ongoing Investigation & Restrictions:
Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover possible illegal wildlife trade networks. Meanwhile, the shop owner has been temporarily restricted from selling snakes until the inquiry concludes.
