Passengers traveling towards Kolkata and other eastern destinations are facing major disruption as the Railways has announced the cancellation of over 40 trains due to infrastructure upgrade work. The cancellations, which begin from April 11 and will continue till April 23, 2025, are due to the construction of a fourth line on the Raigarh–Jharsuguda rail section under South East Central Railway’s Bilaspur Division.
A total of 36 trains have been cancelled, while 4 have been diverted and 3 short-terminated, affecting thousands of passengers daily. The move has severely impacted rail connectivity between Mumbai, Pune, and Kolkata, as several long-distance trains on this route are now off the grid.
Prominent Cancelled Trains Include:
– 12859/12860 Gitanjali Express (Mumbai–Howrah)
– 12129/12130 Azad Hind Express (Pune–Howrah)
– 12101/12102 Jnaneshwari Express (LTT–Shalimar)
– 12222/12221 Howrah–Pune Duronto Express
– 12151/12152 LTT–Shalimar Express
(Full list follows in the original advisory)
The sudden cancellations took many passengers by surprise, especially those who had already booked tickets and received last-minute SMS alerts from the Railways. With very few trains operating on the affected route, the remaining services are either overbooked or unavailable.
As a result, many passengers are turning to road and air travel. Flight fares on the Mumbai–Kolkata and Pune–Kolkata sectors have already seen a sharp spike due to rising demand.
Passengers are advised to check the latest train schedules and explore alternate travel plans during this period.
