At least seven people died, and over 39 were injured in a stampede at North Goa’s Lairaee Devi temple festival in the wee hours on Saturday. The injured have been shifted to Goa’s Medical College and Hospital. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant rushed to the hospital to enquire about the injured devotees.
A large number of devotees had gathered to perform the religious rituals at the temple premises. The temple is also a meditation centre for the devotees. Every year, 40,000 to 50,000 devotees gather to perform the annual rituals. The devotees in the region had gathered since Friday night. The stampede occurred around 3 am, when people started walking fast on a slope. Spreading rumours about fire at the temple also rattled the devotees, who started running for safety. In the melee, seven people died, and 30 suffered injuries.
