The Maharashtra Transport Department is firmly pushing for the mandatory installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. The deadline to comply is June 30, 2025. With just under a month remaining, less than 10% of vehicles in Nagpur have been upgraded, mirroring the low compliance rate seen statewide.
In response, the Transport Commissioner has directed all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to withhold vehicle-related services—including ownership transfers—until the vehicle is fitted with an HSRP. This measure is intended to prevent criminal misuse and tampering of vehicle number plates.
The statewide HSRP installation drive began on January 1, 2025, and was initially scheduled to end on March 31 but was later extended to June 30. Despite this six-month period, compliance remains disappointingly low. Several factors have contributed to the delay, including higher installation charges compared to other states, limited public awareness, a shortage of fitment centers, and inadequate facilities at existing centers.
