In a span of two years, 850 e-buses will be plying in the city, replacing almost all the present diesel buses. The diesel-operated buses are being removed from service.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in March 2023 about replacing the diesel buses with e-buses. The State Government had also sanctioned Rs 137 crore for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.
The buses are being introduced to reduce pollution. The 240 diesel buses received by NMC in 2009 are required to be discarded as per the government rules. The process is in progress. Only 76 diesel buses are presently plying, which will be replaced by e-buses. The cost of operation will be reduced, and the losses by NMC is expected to be reduced by 40 percent.
In the first phase, 30 e-buses have been received, which were recently launched by Fadnavis. These buses will be fully operational from July 1. NMC has 445 buses, of which 214 are e-buses. Remaining buses will be added to the fleet in phases. 230 buses will be 9 meters long, while 250 buses will be 12 meters long.
Bus services to and from the airport will start for the convenience of the people.
