Maharashtra’s government nurses have announced a two‑phase protest next week over what they call an unresolved pay disparity that dates back to the implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission in 2016.
According to Shahjad Baba Khan, secretary of the Government Medical College & Hospital (GMC&H) Nurses Sanghatana, members of the Maharashtra State Nurses Union will stage a dharna at Azad Maidan on 15 and 16 July. If the state fails to intervene, they plan a 24‑hour strike on 17 July, to be followed by an indefinite walk‑out starting 18 July.
Nurses say the Bakshi Committee’s recommendations, adopted with the Seventh Pay Commission from 1 January 2016, were supposed to eliminate wage anomalies but left the nursing cadre at a disadvantage. The union raised the issue repeatedly, prompting the state to set up the Khullar Committee; however, Khan says its findings have not resolved the inequity.
Key demands include scrapping contract‑based nurse recruitment in favour of permanent appointments and closing the salary gap with other employees under the Seventh Pay Commission scale.
