Raising alarm over farmer exploitation and large-scale corruption, MLA Dr. Ashish Deshmukh on Tuesday demanded that Nagpur’s Kalamna APMC be granted ‘National Market Committee’ status. Speaking in the state assembly, Deshmukh alleged a ₹55 crore scam within the committee, accusing it of becoming a “loot hub” for farmers.
He stressed that Kalamna handles over ₹3,500 crore in annual agri-trade, with 70% of produce coming from outside Maharashtra, making it crucial to the state’s agricultural economy.
Deshmukh urged the government to declare Kalamna a pilot project, which would bring transparency and accountability. In response, Marketing Minister Jaykumar Rawal assured that positive steps will be taken.
The demand, if accepted, could make Kalamna a national model—turning a scandal-scarred mandi into a symbol of reform.
